2009 Color of the Year

At Fletcher Prince, when we are researching color trends for our graphic designs, we like to check out Pantone’s Color of the Year.  Last year’s color was a brilliant Iris purple, which of course, you see everywhere now.  The hot color for 2009 is Mimosa yellow, a warm and engaging on-trend color.  We used a very similar yellow in the special event materials we designed for the Washington PR Woman of the Year Award in 2008.

The background on this color selection is interesting.  Apparently echoing President-Elect Obama’s popular campaign message, the color experts at Pantone believe this color evokes a sense of hope and reassurance in a climate of change. “In a time of economic uncertainty and political change, optimism is paramount and no other color expresses hope and reassurance more than yellow.”

The psychological impact and appeal of this color in the recession is significant. “The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
