The Fletcher Prince Design Safari

Get Inspired — Take a “Design Safari”

Selecting the right colors for your marketing materials and website is a science and an art.  It’s also a lot of fun!  One way we, at Fletcher Prince, tap into the colors of the moment is by taking a “design safari.”

It’s not hard to find trend colors, many of which are as close as your local Target.  A design safari is a fun and useful way to inform your marketing decisions about color.

When designing our website last year, we compiled an entire wall of fabric and gift wrap swatches, magazine layouts, web pages, paint chips, color palettes, and photos depicting different colors and combinations.  With the help of research, that creative process helped us decide about the look and colors of our website and our brand.
We also do this when creating collateral for our clients.  Some of the products we look at during a “design safari” for clues about trend colors include

  • KitchenAid Stand Mixers
  • Crate and Barrel mixing bowls and textiles
  • Container Store gift wrap
  • Store and mall signage
  • “Indie” brands, like natural sodas, etc. (not brand-category forerunners)
  • Magazine layouts (Family Circle, Oprah, Domino, etc.)
  • The latest tech gadgets, such as cameras and flash drives
  • Purses and shoes, and other fashion accessories

Packaging and gift wrap are also good inspirations for design and typography.  Accessories are fail-safe trend indicators.  Even in a down economy, women will buy accessories in trend colors and designs to modernize their wardrobes, which is why it’s important to look at shoe and purse colors.  Those are the colors of women’s dreams!
