For Your Editorial Calendar: August Engagement and Marketing Ideas
I said it. Let’s face it: for most communicators, DC is dead in August. Maybe we should just get rid of it.
But wait! There are still a few engagement ideas, important days, and PR events this month! Really!
Okay, most of these are kind of whimsical. But there just isn’t much else happening. So, check them out.
Wednesday, August 1 Nothing is going on until next week. Let’s go to the beach and pretend to be working. JUST KIDDING.
You know what? Actually, there are a bunch of congressional hearings today and tomorrow on Capitol Hill, which is where I will be. So check out the legislative calendar — some are open to the public.
After that, the reps will be out of DC until after Labor Day, and the Senators will be close behind ’em. Don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out.
Friday, August 3 – 5 Let’s go shopping! It’s the Virginia Sales Tax Holiday! Qualifying school supplies (under $20 each) and clothing (under $100 each) will be tax free this weekend for back to school shopping.

Saturday, August 4 – 5 Feeling creative? The largest event of everything LEGO, BrickFair, will take place at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA this weekend. There will be some fantastic LEGO creations at this fan festival to photograph! Follow @BrickFair on Twitter.
You know what you could do? You could make your logo with LEGOs! A LEGO logo! How cute is that? Then take a picture and put it on your company’s Facebook Page. I mean, it’s August. What else have you got to do?
Monday, August 6 August is Back-t0-School Month in the U.S. Personally, I think it’s cruel to even MENTION back to school until the last week of August. But you know it will be all over the airwaves and social media. So you might as well turn all that chatter to your marketing advantage.
